A powerful, sudden vulcanian explosion occurred at the volcano Tuesday afternoon (14:45 local time). It originated from the Barujari cinder cone inside the Rinjani caldera and generated a dense column of ash and ejected rock fragments that reached a height of 2000 m.
Part of the eruption column collapsed into pyroclastic flows that reached short distances around the cone (less than 1000 m runout length). The ash plume itself drifted quickly southwest, forcing a temporary closure of Lombok's international airport and some flight disruptions (cancellations), in particular on the popular routes between Australia and Bali.

It seems that the explosion was a violent, but isolated and brief event similar to the explosion on 1 August this year. Probably, it was caused by sudden release of over-pressurized gasses trapped inside the conduit as older magma from the recent eruption end of last year continues to cool and release gasses, possibly with the influence of infiltration of rain/lake water. In that case, no new magma itself has caused it and the mechanism is a so-called phreatic event.
According to BVMBG volcanologists, the event was accompanied by a short peak in tremor which has afterwards disappeared. The alert level of the volcano was raised from 1 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4, "waspada": watch). An exclusion zone of 3 km radius around the Barujari cone is in place.
