The large, triangular-shaped island of Anjouan is the dissected remnant of a large shield volcano. Formation of the N'Tingui shield volcano was followed by fissure eruptions in three directions of Pleistocene age. A long interval of erosion was followed by the eruption of lava flows that filled deep valleys and flooded coastal areas.---
