Aso volcano (central Kyushu, Japan): fluctuating tremor continues

The Japan Meteorological Agency's (JMA) seismic network recorded an increased seismic activity related to periods of fluctuating volcanic tremor during the past few days, a typical sign for the upcoming eruption.

On 2 May at 21:00 local time the volcanic tremor started to rise gradually at moderate levels and continued up to 18:00 local time on 4 May. After this, periods of amplitude tremor started to decrease, but remained at higher levels than previous average levels on 2 May.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions rose 990 ft (300 m) above the crater and reached to a 200 tonnes/day.
The alert level for the volcano was raised to Level 2.
The public was warned to stay at least 1 km away from the crater.
