An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 8 minutes ago 186 km northeast of Talcahuano, Chile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 78 km beneath the epicenter near San Javier in the morning on Wednesday 25 November 2020 at 7.58 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Javier (pop. 22,400) located 11 km from the epicenter, San Clemente (pop. 13,700) 12 km away, Talca (pop. 197,500) 18 km away, Colbún (pop. 3,700) 22 km away, Linares (pop. 69,500) 30 km away, Rancagua (pop. 212,700) 176 km away, Talcahuano (pop. 253,000) 186 km away, and Concepción (pop. 215,400) 190 km away.
