Significant 5.3 quake hits near Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea
5.3 quake 26 Nov 1:47 pm (GMT +10)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred around noon on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 1.47 pm local time near Angoram, Papua New Guinea, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Angoram (pop. 1,600) located 106 km from the epicenter, Madang (pop. 27,400) 125 km away, Laiagam (pop. 900) 143 km away, Mount Hagen (pop. 33,600) 156 km away, Kundiawa (pop. 9,400) 158 km away, Wabag (pop. 4,000) 160 km away, Goroka (pop. 18,500) 175 km away, and Wewak (pop. 18,200) 179 km away.
