An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 12 minutes ago 162 km northeast of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Angoram early afternoon on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 2.42 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Angoram (pop. 1,600) located 110 km from the epicenter, Madang (pop. 27,400) 120 km away, Laiagam (pop. 900) 151 km away, Kundiawa (pop. 9,400) 161 km away, Mount Hagen (pop. 33,600) 162 km away, Wabag (pop. 4,000) 168 km away, Goroka (pop. 18,500) 176 km away, and Wewak (pop. 18,200) 182 km away.
