Magnitude 3.3 earthquake strikes near Mammoth Lakes, California
3.3 quake 26 Nov 1:50 am (GMT -8)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred early morning on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 1.50 am local time near Lee Vining, California, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well.
Despite its relatively small magnitude, the quake could probably be felt very close to the epicenter. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lee Vining (pop. 200) located 21 miles from the epicenter, Mono City (pop. 200) 22 miles away, Benton (pop. 300) 22 miles away, June Lake (pop. 600) 26 miles away, Bridgeport (pop. 600) 29 miles away, and Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900) 31 miles away.
