Anak Krakatau volcano (Sunda Strait, Indonesia), activity report 9-11 Nov 2010: strong ash eruptions

Суббота ноя 13, 2010 08:59 |

A small group of VolcanoDiscovery visited Krakatau between 9-11 November: During this time, we observed strong ash emissions from the summit crater, a twin crater with two craters separated by a narrow ridge, one breached to the SE at the same position of the older summit crater and one facing to the NW. The 2007-2009 crater and lava dome complex to the S beneath the summit crater are mostly covered, but still morphologically visible.
On 9-10 November, both craters were erupting dense ash clouds forming plumes of 100-1000 m height at typical intervals of 2-5 minutes. Often, these ash ventings were vertical fountains often lasting up to a few minutes. Some of the eruptions were more explosive, vulcanian-type and ejected many blocks, but were less intense than those observed in 2007 and 2009. At night, only few incandescent material was visible.
The activity dropped on 10 November in both intensity and frequency of the eruptions. A new small vent opened on the SW rim of the summit crater at around 11 am on 10 Nov, emitting a long-lasting ash fountain. This vent created a small depression on the summit crater rim. Later on, activity at this vent dropped and resumed intermittently such as from the other main vents.

Anak Krakatau started a new eruption, our volcanologist guide Doni reports from Indonesia. Explosions (near the summit?) created a new crater on its eastern side. [подробнее]

During a recent visit to Krakatau from 12-14 July on one of our tours, ash eruptions were observed, producing plumes of several hundreds of meters. During night, however, no incandescence was seen. [подробнее]

Explosive activity at Anak Krakatau has resumed over the past weeks. Strong vulcanian-type eruptions from the growing lava dome in the new crater occur at intervals of 90-360 minutes as Yohannes one of our correspondants reports from a recent visit. Blocks are being thrown over the whole of the southern part of the island, including the forest and often reach the water as well. Small pyroclastic flows sometimes develop on the slope of the summit cone. The island must be regarded as an extremely dangerous place to be at the moment. Whoever visits the island should be aware of the risk of a sudden violent explosion, especially because there is little warning before an explosion and there are long intervals of quiet in between. The activity at Anak Krakatau has been quieting down to a few small explosions and the growth of a new lava dome in the new crater has slowed. [подробнее]
A powerful vulcanian explosion in its initial stage showing the expanding explosion of the pressurized plug. (2 July 09)

After a 36 hrs pause in activity between the evening of 30 June and the morning of 2 July, Anak Krakatau started again with powerful vulcanian explosions. The largest of these explosions were preceded by an inflation and shaking of the active cone or lava dome, triggering rock-slides from its flanks, until the plug gave way in giant explosions ejecting a rapdly expanding mass of red-hot lava, solid rocks, and large amounts of ash, forming plumes of up to 2 km heights. Most of these explosions ejected many blocks into the sea and the forest of Anak Krakatau, and on one location, our boat at around 500m distance from the shore, had to make a quick escape from falling blocks, some of which nevertheless fell beyond the boat, but fortunately did not hit...
