Number of emissions and explosions at Popo during the past days (image: CENAPRED)
The volcano has increased its activity with more frequent individual explosions: during the last 24 hours, 160 exhalations (passive emissions of steam, gas and/or ash), 548 minutes of low amplitude tremor, and a comparably large number of 16 explosions occurred.
Seven of these occurred yesterday at 09:33, 13:25, 16:00, 16:38, 17:35, 20:44 and 23:27 local time, the others today at 00:15, 01:28, 02:12, 02:35, 02:50, 03:16, 06:20, 07:13 and 08:46. Ash plumes rose to approx. 20-24,000 ft (6-7 km) altitude.
Summary of activity during 7-13 Aug
CENAPRED reported that each day during 7-13 August there were 125-209 steam-and-gas emissions from Popocatépetl, some of which contained ash. As many as seven explosions were recorded daily, with the exceptions of 7 August (no explosion were detected) and 11 August (16 were documented).
Two explosions on 13 August were characterized as major (at 0427 and 0453) and ejected incandescent material onto the flanks. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, Phase Two (middle level on a three-color scale). (source: Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report 7-13 August 2019)
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
