Shiveluch volcano (Kamchatka), activity update: powerful explosion strong ash emissions

A paroxysmal eruptive phase occured on Shiveluch volcano on 27 October between 14h00 and 20h40 UTC. According to satellite data, an ash plume rose to at least 12 km (ca. 40,000 ft).
Ash falls were noted at Ust-Kamchatsk from 18:00 UTC on October 27 till 03:00 UTC on October 28. The airport and road from Ust-Kamchatsk to Kluchi were closed. The thickness of a layer of ash with snow was about 2 cm at Ust-Kamchatsk. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended > 2,500 km (1,550 mi) to the east from the volcano on October 27-28.
Powerful activity continues at Shiveluch volcano. Several ash explosions have reached 7 km (23,000 ft) asl on October 28.

Shiveluch on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia continues to be very active. An eruption last week produced an ash plume reaching 7.5 km.

On 31 July-7 August seismic activity from Shiveluch was above background levels. There was a large daily thermal anomaly over the lava dome. Video camera data shows, that ash plumes rose to an altitude of 4 km on 2 August. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange.

A strong explosive eruption took place at Sheveluch volcano on May 1st, 2009, sending an ash cloud to 5 km above the volcano. The eruption followed a week of heightened seismicity and might be the start of a stronger eruptive phase.

On 21-28 February there were eruptions reported that produced ash plumes and also it was indicatedt that the lava dome is still growing.
