Zoom onto the active lava dome of Sinabung volcano in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Two active lava lobes of viscous (sticky) lava are descending on the SE and E upper flanks, generating small rockfalls and, occasionally, lager avalanches that turn into pyroclastic flows.

Pyroclastic flow on Sinabung volcano, Indonesia, 27 July 2015

The growing lava dome at Sinabung volcano consists of sticky lava accumulating in the summit crater and descending as thick lobes on the SE and E flanks. When these become unstable, parts collapse into avalanches, which turn into hot, turbulent mixtures of gas and lava rock fragments of all sizes disintegrating into fine ash. This flow occurred around 12:20 local time on 27 July 2015 on the eastern flank.

Sinabung volcano eruption 13 Jan 2014: large pyroclastic flows

Time-lapse video of Sinabung volcano today: After a few days of deceiving calm, the eruption of the volcano intensified again today and produced the so-far largest pyroclastic flows, reaching probably more than 5-6 km in length, and associated ash plumes that rose to approx. 25,000 ft (8 km) altitude. It seems that during the past days, lots of gas-rich, sticky lava has accumulated at the vent, until pressure was high enough to push it outside and causing it to collapse and/or explode. Sinabung volcano (Sumatra, Indonesia) continues to be active with viscous lava extruded at the new dome, which frequently collapses to form hot avalanches (pyroclastic flows) that generate ash plumes. The direction of the path of the pyroclastic flows has gradually shifted a bit to the east (right) of the previous path of flows (gray areas are the pyroclastic deposits on flank and at the base of the volcano). Sinabung volcano eruption 8 Jan 2014: pyroclastic flows

Sinabung volcano (Sumatra, Indonesia) continues to be very active with frequent small to moderate pyroclastic flows (hot avalanches of hot rocks and ash mixed with gas and air, triggered by partial collapses of the growing lava dome). The flows run down the SE slope where an extensive delta of pyroclastic deposits is formed and reach 2-4 km length at the moment. The risk of larger flows that would threaten the village in the foreground remains high. The exclusion zone in this area is 7 km from the summit. More at http://webcams.volcanodiscovery.com

Sinabung volcano eruption, Sumatra, Indonesia 15 Sep 2013

A new eruption occurred over night at Sumatra's Sinabung volcano. This time-lapse video from the VSI webcam shows a degassing plume in the evening, a possible incandescent spot at the volcano's summit, and bright (lava ?) glow in an area left below the summit starting at 02:55 local time. Judging from the images, it seems to be caused glowing rockfalls from rapidly extruded lava in that area, or impacts from explosive activity (less likely). No significant ash plume could be spotted on satellite data.
