A series of strong vulcaninan-type explosions occurred from the volcano over the past week. The activity of the volcano is characterized by strong ash emissions from the summit Ontake crater.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) reported about dense dark ash plumes which reached approx. 7,000 ft (2,100 m) altitude and were dispersed about 4 km to south-southwest of the volcano.
Explosions generated lava bombs and blocks that were ejected about 700 away from the crater.
The current activity follows near-constat glow in the Ontake crater.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs could affect an area of about 1 km distance from the main crater.
