Udina volcano (Kamchatka, Russia) activity update: Significant magma intrusion- no eruption imminent

A recent paper has brought to attention a long-term increase in seismicity under this long-dormant volcano (it is unknown when it last erupted), attributed to new magma intruding into the re-activated plumbing system.

The unrest began in December 2017 and a temporary seismic network was installed in May-July 2018; over 500 earthquakes were detected, centred in an elliptical cluster more than 5km below the surface.

Interestingly, this activity appears to originate from a magma storage zone that also feeds fissure eruptions at nearby Tolbachik (such as in 2012).

While this is a significant development, there is no sign of an impending eruption, and it is unknown if this unrest will lead to an eruption, or when said eruption would happen. It is also unknown what the nature of eruptive activity would be- the typically sensationalist media headlines should be taken with a pinch of salt.
