A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near San Antonio, San Antonio Province, Region de Valparaiso, Chile, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 9:57 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Los Navegantes (pop. 230) located 45 km from the epicenter, San Antonio (pop. 85,700) 63 km away, Cartagena (pop. 16,900) 66 km away, Melipilla (pop. 63,100) 87 km away, Santa Cruz (pop. 33,300) 97 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 115 km away, and Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) 119 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rancagua (pop. 212,700) located 124 km from the epicenter.
