An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 18 minutes ago 20 km southeast of Iraklion, Greece, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 1 km beneath the epicenter near Iraklion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in the morning on Sunday 18 July 2021 at 7:56 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2, and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.0.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Arkalochori (pop. 3,500) located 4 km from the epicenter.
In Thrapsanon (pop. 1,500) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Kasteli (pop. 1,800) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iraklion (pop. 137,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Néa Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 21 km away, Gazi (pop. 12,600) 24 km away, and Malia (pop. 4,300) 25 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aghios Nicolaos (pop. 11,400) located 44 km from the epicenter, and Rethymnon (pop. 32,500) 72 km away.
