Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 33 miles northeast of Mammoth Lakes, California, United States

A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported in the morning near Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday 29 July 2021 at 7:23 am local time at a shallow depth of 8.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Benton (pop. 280) located 17 miles from the epicenter. In Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900, 33 miles away), Hawthorne (pop. 3,300, 34 miles away), Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600, 46 miles away), and West Bishop (pop. 2,600, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
