An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 22 minutes ago 48 km southwest of Mapastepec, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 29 km beneath the epicenter near Mapastepec, Chiapas, Mexico, early evening on Thursday 29 July 2021 at 7:01 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Barranquilla (pop. 50) located 31 km from the epicenter, and La Esperanza (El Zapotal) (pop. 1000) 39 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mapastepec (pop. 17,900) located 48 km from the epicenter, Soconusco (pop. 2,500) 55 km away, Acapetahua (pop. 6,100) 57 km away, Acacoyagua (pop. 7,500) 61 km away, Escuintla (pop. 9,600) 62 km away, Pijijiapan (pop. 16,900) 65 km away, and Villa Comaltitlan (pop. 7,200) 67 km away.
