A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Hemet, Riverside County, California, USA, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 8.4 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Tuesday, September 21st, 2021, at 3:57 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mountain Center (pop. 63) located 5 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palm Springs (pop. 47,400) located 17 miles from the epicenter, Hemet (pop. 83,900) 17 miles away, Cathedral City (pop. 53,800) 17 miles away, San Jacinto (pop. 47,000) 18 miles away, Palm Desert (pop. 51,900) 20 miles away, Menifee (pop. 87,200) 26 miles away, and Temecula (pop. 112,000) 27 miles away. In Riverside (pop. 322,400, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
