Moderate magnitude 4.5 quake hits 29 km northwest of Kandrian, Papua New Guinea around noon

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 20 minutes ago 29 km northwest of Kandrian, Papua New Guinea, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 47.8 km beneath the epicenter near Kandrian, West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, around noon on Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at 1:49 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kandrian (pop. 1000) located 29 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kimbe (pop. 18,800) located 106 km from the epicenter.
