Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 82 km southeast of Nukalofa, Tonga early afternoon

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Nukalofa, Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Tuesday, December 27th, 2022, at 2:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in 'Ohonua (pop. 1,200) located 51 km from the epicenter, Lapaha (pop. 8,000) 74 km away, Kolonga (pop. 1,100) 76 km away, Haveluloto (pop. 3,400) 81 km away, Nukalofa (pop. 22,400) 82 km away, and Nuku'alofa (pop. 22,400) 82 km away.
