Background

Zengyu (also known as Cengyu) is submarine volcano north of Taiwan, NE of Pengchiahsu Island. The summit of the volcano is at a depth of 418 m. A steam eruption lasting 10 minutes was observed over an area of 30 sq m by a Japanese naval vessel on April 18, 1916 (Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World), but there were no reports of the ejection of solid material. Chen (1986) reported vapor emission and water discoloration that lasted until June 1, 1927, although the nature and duration of this activity is not certain.
