Ruapehu volcano (New Zealand): exclusion zone of 2 km around the summit

Small earthquakes appear on the otherwise seismic recording from Ruapehu volcano.
Alert level remains at 1 as an eruption is not thought imminent, but as a precaution, the New Zealand government has placed a safety exclusion zone of 2 km around the summit area.

GeoNet reported that measurements at Ruapehu during the previous few weeks indicated that the likelihood of an eruption had increased. Scientists were concerned that increased heat at depth beneath the crater indicated a partialyl blocked vent and the potential for an eruption due to increased pressure.
