Sabancaya volcano (Peru) activity update: Sabancaya volcano (Peru): phreatic eruption on 25 August

A phreatic explosion occurred at the volcano on the evening of 25 Aug at 20:39 local time, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) informed.
Seismic signal of the phreatic explosion at Sabancaya on 25 Aug (IGP)
The eruption was not observed directly, but inferred from its seismic trace. A swarm of long-period quakes followed the eruption, suggesting internal fluid movements.
The report mentions that the eruption could have been triggered by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that occurred earlier that day in over 200 km distance. Whether such a link is reasonable or not remains questionable.
The eruption was the second such event since the start of the current crisis at the volcano which had started in early 2013 and became more intense in June this year. Apart from the so far isolated explosion, the volcano only presents a degassing plume as sign of internal magma movement.

A pilot reported a volcanic ash plume to approx. 17,000 ft yesterday afternoon, which would infer that the volcano, which has been showing seismic unrest for a while, actually erupted. There are no other indications of an eruption and the ash plume was most likely a weather cloud. ... read all
