Sakurajima started the new year with at least 4 explosions, producing ash plumes up to 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude during 1-2 Jan.

After taking a break during 23-25 Dec, the volcano has been quite productive today with at least 3 explosions so far today, including a moderately large one with ash rising to 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude. [more]

JMA reported that during 26-30 November explosions from Sakura-jima's Showa Crater ejected tephra as far as 1.8 km from the crater. Very small eruptions at Minami-dake Crater occasionally occurred. ... [more]

During the past 24 hours, the volcano has been very active, with 5 moderate explosions or one every 4-5 hours on average. Ash clouds rose to altitudes between 1.8-3.4 km (6-11,000 ft) altitude.
