Sakurajima volcano (Japan): vulcanian explosion with eruption lightning
Sunday Feb 23, 2014 18:50 PM | BY: T
Eruption lightning from an explosion of Sakurajima this evening
The volcano has increasingly strong explosions. A vulcanian eruption this evening around 23:10 local time (see video) produced an ash column rising approx 3 km and was accompanied by abundant eruption lightning and ejections of lots of incandescent material. Constant ash emissions constant ash emissions (probably from deep-seated strombolian activity) has been following the explosion.
Thursday, Feb 20, 2014
Eruptions have been stronger again during the past days. In the 4 days since 16 Feb, at least 6 vulcanian-type explosions were recorded with ash plumes rising up to 12,000 ft (3.7 km) altitude.
Sunday, Feb 02, 2014
The volcano's typical small to moderate vulcanian-type explosions have been occurring more frequently again, and now appear to average 1-2 per day. Ash plumes regularly reach 10-12,000 ft (3-3.6 km) altitude.

The volcano seems slowly to produce more powerful vulcanian explosions again. An eruption yesterday morning at 2am local time ejected an ash plume that rose to 12,000 ft (3.6 km) and covered the crater with incandescent material. It was the 10th explosion in 2014: ...

The volcano had an explosion this morning followed by near-continuous ash venting. The eruption sent an ash plume over Tarumizu town to the SW (see video). VAAC Tokyo estimated the maximum height of the ash plume to 17,000 ft (5 km), but webcam images suggest a significantly smaller size (2-3 km altitude). Overall, the volcano has been comparably calm over the past week. ...

Vulcanian-type explosions, which presented a spectacular show during much of the past year, are again becoming more frequent at the volcano, with now averaging one event per day. ...
