Ash plume from an explosion at Sakurajima volcano yesterday morning
The explosive activity at the volcano has been elevated compared to most of the previous months. An average of 4-5 vulcanian explosions have been occurring daily. A strong eruption yesterday produced an ash plume that rose to 15,000 ft (4.5 km) altitude (VAAC Tokyo).

The activity has picked up significantly at the volcano. During the past 30 hours, at least 10 vulcanian-type explosions were recorded. Some of them produced ash plumes rising to 13,000 ft (4 km) altitude, i.e. approx. 3 km above the volcano's Showa crater.

Since about a week ago, the frequency of explosions from the volcano has drastically increased and is now again almost similar to its intense phases of last year. ...

Activity has been unusually low at the volcano since about 2 weeks. The first explosion during August occurred this morning, producing a plume that rose less than 1 km above the summit.

During the past 10 days, activity at the volcano has been relatively low, with 1-2 small to moderate vulcanian-type explosions registered on average per day.

The volcano had a busy weekend with at least 6 explosions during 48 hours. The largest produced an ash plume to 12,000 ft (3.6 km) altitude.
