Sakurajima volcano (Kyushu Island, Japan): near continuous strombolian activity

Saturday Aug 26, 2017 09:44 AM | BY: T

Strombolian activity at Sakurajim on 22 Aug 2017
Strombolian activity at Sakurajim on 22 Aug 2017
During the past week, the activity of the volcano has changed to near-continuous strombolian-type explosions now, very different from the previously typical activity, characterized by intermittent (few per day), but rather strong vulcanian explosions.
This follows a phase of increasing activity in mid August with more frequent than usual vulcanian explosions (up to about 10 per day) and near-continuous ash emissions since 19-20 Aug. The current phase of strombolian-type activity began on 22 Aug and has been concentrated at the Showa crater. It seems that the previous explosions cleared the crater's conduit, which is now open and allows fast and unobstructed rise of fresh magma:

The intensity of the eruptions is only moderate (and small compared to the vulcanian-type explosions previously known from Sakurajima): lava bombs are ejected to approx. 50-100 m, sometimes falling outside the crater rim. How long this phase will last and weather it is evolving into something else (maybe lava flow emission) is unknown.
