Salton Buttes (southern California) - volcanic eruption in near future unlikely
Tue, 30 Oct 2012, 10:06
10:06 AM | BY: TSome poorly researched articles in the boulevard press haven taken this new finding, along with "increased earthquake activity, sulfur smells and mud volcanoes" said to have appeared recently as indicator to possible volcanic eruptions in a near future. In fact, an unusual strong earthquake swarm took place in the area in late August this year, but there were no indications of magmatic origins (such as tremor signals), nor does the USGS (who have the best possible expertise to do so) have issued any alert about possible volcanic activity.
As the Eruptions Blog rightly points out, it is far from certain that the intense sulfur smells are caused by the volcano, and even if so, would not mean that an eruption is likely to occur soon.
That said, on the scale of thousands of years, new volcanic activity in the area is something very plausible to assume.
