San Cristobal volcano (Nicaragua): evacuations and the impact of continuing ash eruptions

Friday Dec 28, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: T

Mild but frequent ash venting continues from San Cristobal and the ash is increasingly impacting the local communities. According to the newspaper El Nuevo Diario, almost 300 people have evacuated their homes voluntarily, only 68 more were evacuated by Civil protection and transferred to relatives or constructed shelters ("albergues"). Currently, there are still about 200 families who refused evacuation despite the insistence of authorities and in some villages even the church, and are now at risk from ash and gas. In addition, Civil Protection has a list of other 400 people to be evacuated if the eruption intensifies.
The Minister of Health announced that two hospitals in Chinandega reserved a portion (40% and 30%) of their room capacity empty in order to accommodate and treat possible victims affected by the eruption. A few dozen cases of respiratory problems have already become known from the community of Las Grecias. He recommended to people to protect themselves with hats and masks and drink plenty of fluids.
Finally, this region is particularly rich in peanut and fruit tree plantations, which are now in full bloom. The ash falls are likely to destroy or damage part of the current production.
