On 24 June IGEPN did a flight observations over the volcano to measure surface activity, morphological changes, thermal anomalies and volcanic gases.
During the overflight the activity of the volcano was associated with generating of small explosions and pyroclastic flows. An ash plume rose 1,640 ft (500 m) above the summit and drifted west. The displacement and deposition of pyroclastic flows was concentrated to the internal part of the ravine on the southeastern flank. It produced an ash columns that rose 200 m above the surface. Volcanic ash was dispersed towards the west.
It was possible to observe three different thermal anomalies on the southeast flank of the volcano. Anomaly 1 with temperature of 125 °C was associated with explosive activity during the flight. Anomaly 2 was related to effusive activity (lava flow) with temperature of 147 °C. Both anomalies are situated in the upper parts of the volcano. Anomaly 3 with temperature of 165 °C is associated with deposits of pyroclastic flows.
The morphology of the volcano has changed in this eruptive phase since May 2019. These changes shown that the summit of the volcano now has at least two maximum elevations, separated by a relatively small saddle of approx. 181 m wide formed by erosion of the northwestern part of the crater.
The presence of ash in the field work area made it impossible to perform the necessary maneuvers to obtain data of volcanic gases (SO2, H2S, CO2 and H2O). Measurements were restricted to the eastern flank.
