Sangay volcano (Ecuador): intense activity, field report 9-14 Jan 2020

The mainly effusive activity of the volcano remains intense, but due to near-constant cloud and fog cover is very difficult to observe.
During our pilot trip to Ecuador, we stayed at the SE flank of the volcano from 9-14 Jan 2019 and occasionally managed to observe the ongoing effusion of viscous lava from a vent near the summit into the prominent drainage on the SE flank of the cone, which eventually leads into the "Rio Volcan" canyon. The lava flow was more or less coherent on approx. 1.5-2 km length, after which it consists of loose blocks from incandescent rockfalls.
At intervals of few to tens of minutes, small collapses along the lava flow generated small pyroclastic flows typically reaching 1-2 km length.
Minor explosive activity also was observed from the summit, generating ash plumes rising a few 100 m.
On one occasion, a loud booming sound from presumably a stronger explosion was heard, but fog cover prevented visual observation.
The effusive-explosive activity generated a near-continuous ash plume drifting at 4-5.5 km altitude towards westerly directions.
