Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update: strong steaming, blocky lava flows from the lava dome, occasional ash explosions

Strong degassing from the dome and a new blocky lava flow entering the notch at the upper crater rim left by the explosions last week were reported by INSIVUMEH. The new flow produces abundant block avalanches causing a fine ash plume drifting W and SW.

In the recent days, Santiaguito has been producing a number of larger-than-average explosions that caused ash fall in the surrounding areas. Ash plumes from these explosions rose 1.5-3.2 km / 5000-10,000 ft above the lava dome and were sometimes accompanied by small pyroclastic flows. read all
