Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Tuesday Jan 08, 2013 11:05 AM | BY: T

A few explosions with ash plumes rising up to 700 m occurred today. A steam plume is rising 250 m above the lava dome, which shows incandescence at night and continues to feed the lava flows on the SE and NE flanks.
Previous news
Thursday, Jan 03, 2013
The lava dome has had a few minor explosions, and continues to emit a large steam plume and aliment the lava flows on its flanks. Incandescence could be seen during the night from their fronts, where detaching blocks generate weak avalanches. The flow on the SE side towards Nimá 1 canyon was advancing. [more]
Wednesday, Jan 02, 2013
Activity has remained generally weak and mainly effusive, with very few and weak ash explosions, and active block lava flows from the dome, that generate constant small avalanches. [more]

Tuesday, Dec 25, 2012
3 rumblings, one strong at 20:46 on 24 Dec and two moderate at 03:00 and 05:33 h local time on 25 Dec, were heard. They lasted between 30 to 50 seconds. 2 moderate explosions were observed at 05:58 and 06:02 and expelled gray ash columns to 700 and 800 m height above the lava dome and drifted southwest, causing ash fall on the areas of La Florida and San Marcos Palajunoj. The lava flows remained weakly active and produced few avalanches from the SE lava flow front. [more]
