Volcano news: Santa Maria (Guatemala)

Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Thursday Jan 10, 2013 11:05 AM | BY: T

Explosion on the morning of 10 Jan with what could have been a small pyroclastic flow (INSIVUMEH webcam)
Explosion on the morning of 10 Jan with what could have been a small pyroclastic flow (INSIVUMEH webcam)
Activity remains elevated with 4 active lava flows from the dome which generate constant rock avalanches.. A steam plume rises from the crater to 250 m height.
Some stronger explosions have occurred as well with ash plumes rising about 800 m and drifting SE and possibly generating weak pyroclastic flows as visible on a recent webcam image.
Previous news
Thursday, Jan 10, 2013
Effusive activity has apparently increased, as INSIVUMEH reports that the SE and NE lava flows descending from the dome are advancing about 5-7 meters per day. This implies a relatively high effusion rate from the summit vent feeding the flows. Explosive activity remains very weak in contrast. [more]
Tuesday, Jan 08, 2013
A few explosions with ash plumes rising up to 700 m occurred today. A steam plume is rising 250 m above the lava dome, which shows incandescence at night and continues to feed the lava flows on the SE and NE flanks. [more]
Thursday, Jan 03, 2013
The lava dome has had a few minor explosions, and continues to emit a large steam plume and aliment the lava flows on its flanks. Incandescence could be seen during the night from their fronts, where detaching blocks generate weak avalanches. The flow on the SE side towards Nimá 1 canyon was advancing. [more]
Wednesday, Jan 02, 2013
Activity has remained generally weak and mainly effusive, with very few and weak ash explosions, and active block lava flows from the dome, that generate constant small avalanches. [more]
Sunday, Dec 30, 2012
The Santiaguito lava dome has been comparably calm with few or no explosive activity reported during the past days. [more]
