Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Activity remains essentially unchanged. Small to moderate explosions are occurring at rates of 1-3 per hour, producing ash plumes that typically rise 300-600 m. Extrusion of viscous lava feeds several active block lava flows on the upper slopes of the Caliente dome. Their activity can be seen as near-constant avalanches.
Previous news
Small rock avalanche from the Caliente lava dome
Sunday, Jan 05, 2014
The volcano observatory reports no changes in activity: abundant degassing, weak to moderate explosions with ash plumes rising 500-700 m and constant block avalanches from the lava flows on the east and SW flanks of the dome. [more]
Thursday, Jan 02, 2014
Weak to moderate explosions and abundant rock falls from the active flows on the NE and SE side of the Caliente lava dome were reported by INSIVUMEH. [more]
Explosion at Santiaguuito this morning
Tuesday, Dec 10, 2013
The observatory reports little changes: an explosion occurred with an ash plume of 900 m height, and avalanches continue to descend from the active block lava flows. [more]
Monday, Dec 09, 2013
No significant changes in activity occurred, which consists of sporadic small ash explosions and constant avalanches from the active block lava flows descending on the sides of the dome. [more]
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013
Explosive and effusive activity have continued with little variation. Explosions sent ash plumes up to 700 m above the crater, and block lava effusion continues mainly at the eastern side of the Caliente dome where weak to moderate constant avalanches occur. [more]
