Volcano news: Santa Maria (Guatemala)

Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Wednesday Jan 15, 2014 17:00 PM | BY: T

Santiaguito volcano this morning (INSIVUMEH webcam)
Santiaguito volcano this morning (INSIVUMEH webcam)
A moderate explosion occurred this morning at 06:18 local time, forming a grayish ash column 700 m high, moving southeast causing light ashfall on the Santa Maria volcano and in Villa San José. The main activity remains effusion of blocky lava mainly from the SE and SW rims of the Caliente dome, where constants weak to moderate avalanches detach from the flows.
Previous news
Monday, Jan 13, 2014
The volcano's activity has remained essentially unchanged. Small explosions, intense degassing and viscous lava extrusion, especially on the NE side of the Caliente dome were reported this morning. [more]
The lava dome of Santiaguito this morning
Thursday, Jan 09, 2014
Activity remains essentially unchanged. Small to moderate explosions are occurring at rates of 1-3 per hour, producing ash plumes that typically rise 300-600 m. Extrusion of viscous lava feeds several active block lava flows on the upper slopes of the Caliente dome. Their activity can be seen as near-constant avalanches. [more]
Small rock avalanche from the Caliente lava dome
Sunday, Jan 05, 2014
The volcano observatory reports no changes in activity: abundant degassing, weak to moderate explosions with ash plumes rising 500-700 m and constant block avalanches from the lava flows on the east and SW flanks of the dome. [more]
Thursday, Jan 02, 2014
Weak to moderate explosions and abundant rock falls from the active flows on the NE and SE side of the Caliente lava dome were reported by INSIVUMEH. [more]
