Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala): collapse of lava flows triggers pyroclastic flows
Sat, 10 May 2014, 11:0511:05 AM | BY: T
A strong eruptive phase occurred yesterday from around 10 am local time and produced a series of pyroclastic flows that affected the southern and eastern slopes of the Caliente lava dome. Associated co-igimbrite ash plumes rose to estimated 7-8 km altitude.

The activity seems to have been caused by partial collapse of the viscous lava flows on the steep sides of the dome. Ash fall was reported in the villages Las Marías, San Marcos Palajunoj, El Faro, La florida, and Patzulín, all located on the southern side of the volcano.

Activity has not changed much over the past weeks. The observatory reports moderate explosions ejecting gray ash plumes rising up to about 800 m and causing light ash falls in areas to the west of the lava dome. ... read all
