I was on a flight yesyerday from Jember to Surabaya with 2 friends and saw Mt Semeru explode at app. 09.37 on the 18 Oct 2008. We were about 20 km from the mountain when I noticed the the top had a small gray mushroom at the top with in a minute or so i was extremley greater in size. I would not be able to guess how high it rose but it was larger than the clouds around. I'm just sending this message as I did not read anything in the news. Read more... read all

Small pyroclastic flows and rockfall avalanches have been observed at Semeru since 22 May. The pyroclastic flows travelled a maximum distance of 2.5 km from the active crater. Read more...Thu, 22 May 2008, 07:47
Semeru's activity is increasing and VSI has increased the alert level to 3 (out of 4), recommending to keep at least 4 km away from the summit. Read more...

Based on pilot observations, the Darwin VAAC reported that a plume from Semeru rose vertically to an altitude of 6.1 km (20,000 ft) a.s.l. on 21 April. More on VolcanoDiscovery
