Semeru volcano news & eruption updatesWed, 26 Nov 2014, 09:55 The active lava dome of Semeru in late Nov 2014 (photo: Andi / VolcanoDiscovery Indonesia) A recent visit at the summit of the volcano by our expedition leader Andi and Markus confirmed that "Semeru's lava dome is growing bigger and wider, and now has a diameter of 100-200 m. Read more...Strombolian explosions occur from time to time and eject bombs up to 100 m above the vent. Gas venting from two vents is loud and continuous. According to our observations, part of the dome has collapsed recently to the south flank. A moderately viscous lava forms a long tongue descending into the southern ravine" ![]() Close-up of the active lava dome of Semeru in late Nov 2014 (photo: Andi / VolcanoDiscovery Indonesia) [ less] read allSun, 21 Sep 2014, 10:02 ![]() Strombolian activity in Semeru seen in mid Sep 2014 (photo: Andi / VolcanoDiscovery) Our recent tour group on Java observed mild ongoing strombolian activity in the volcano's summit crater. Read more...A flat lava dome is growing there and extruding a viscous lava flow into the open ravine to the south flank. [ less] Fri, 12 Sep 2014, 13:06 The slow extrusion of a lava flow from the summit crater continues and forms a dark tongue extending a few 100 meters. Rockfalls detaching from it roll frequently down the Kembar ravine on the southern flank. Read more...On contrast, the previously typical intermittent strombolian ash explosions of the volcano, in continuous activity since 1976, have been almost absent during the past months. [ less] Wed, 23 Jul 2014, 14:15 ![]() Glow from Semeru's summit at night (VSI webcam) Activity, weak during the past months, seems to have picked up. A new lava flow has started to slowly descend the southeastern slope. Read more...Since the intense explosive phase of activity in February 2012, accompanied by pyroclastic flows down the southern slope, a lava dome has been growing slowly inside the breached summit crater. This dome now started to form a more or less coherent lava lobe that began descending through the notch onto the upper southern slope. Weak glow is visible at night. As a comparison of satellite images between 7 June and 16 July, compiled by Culture Volcan shows the progression of a tongue of hot material inside the ravine, likely a lava flow reaching 1,5-2 km length. ![]() Progression of a presumed lava flow (thermal anomaly) on the SE slope (Images: ASTER/GSJ, compiled and annotated by Culture Volcan) ![]() Comparison of Semeru's crater from 2011, 2012, and 2014 showing the slow growth of a lava dome with its new lobe (r) (images: Aris Yanto /Ndeso Adventures) [ less] read all
