Semeru's lava flow on the southern slope (image: VSI webcam)
A lava flow is again active on the southern slope of the volcano. After similar activity during the first half of the year, the lava flow stopped around early August, but reappeared in September. At the moment it has a length of approx. 1500 m and can be seen from the south. Read more...

During an ongoing tour in East Java, our small group observed glow and mild explosive (strombolian) activity from Semeru volcano's summit crater. The lava flow in the southern ravine was inactive.

The activity has not changed significantly for several months at Java's highest and most active volcano. The lava flow on the upper southern flank of the volcano remains active. Due to the steep incline, incandescent rockfalls from its side and front are relatively frequent. Read more... read all

A pyroclastic flow (hot avalanche of fragmented volcanic material) occurred on the volcano's southern side yesterday morning, reaching 4.5 km length and producing an ash plume that rose to 26,000 ft (8 km) altitude. Darwin VAAC raised the aviation color code to RED. Read more... read all
