Read more...According to the Semeru volcano observatory of Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency (PVMBG), this activity has now entered the stage of producing pyroclastic flows, recorded since 28 November. Pyroclastic flows are hot avalanches of fragmented hot material, both large and small (ash) particles, extremely mobile as they mix with volcanic gasses and ambient air to become gravity-driven currents reaching high velocities. These also called "block-and-ash flows" are likely caused by gravitational collapse of the lava dome in the inner summit crater as well as the lava flow on the steep slope of the volcano. They have been traveling over the southeastern slopes and formed huge secondary ash clouds (so-called phoenix) clouds, as can be seen in the images. ![]() The block-and-ash flows from Semeru volcano (image: @amedpav/twitter) ![]() The block-and-ash flows from Semeru volcano (image: @amedpav/twitter) [ less] read allMon, 30 Nov 2020, 20:00 ![]() Satellite image of Semeru volcano on 30 Nov 2020 Sat, 28 Nov 2020, 17:30 ![]() Satellite image of Semeru volcano on 28 Nov 2020 Sat, 28 Nov 2020, 05:45 Fri, 27 Nov 2020, 23:30 ![]() Satellite image of Semeru volcano on 27 Nov 2020 Fri, 27 Nov 2020, 00:00 Wed, 18 Nov 2020, 09:16 ![]() Continuing lava flows from Semeru volcano visible from satellite on 16 Nov (image: Sentinel 2) The effusive-explosive eruption of the volcano continues and no significant change in activity has occurred since the last update.
