Shishaldin volcano news & activity updates:

Shishaldin volcano (United States, Aleutian Islands) activity update: mild explosive activity, intermittent more intense phases

Friday Oct 31, 2014 15:59 PM | BY: T

Eruptive activity at the volcano continues. Most of the time, it seems to be weak, probably strombolian in nature, but there have been episodes with more intense activity, possibly lava fountaining, evidenced by strong tremor and elevated surface temperatures.
Such an episode occurred during 25-28 Oct. Elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite images beginning on October 25, and early that evening seismic tremor began to be recorded on nearby seismic stations, accompanied by stronger thermal anomalies.
New deposits of ash and ballistics darkened the summit area, indicating the activity was energetic enough to eject material from a depth of several hundred meters (~600 ft / 200 m) within the summit crater. The activity was recorded on infrasound arrays located in Akutan, 90 mi (145 km) to the southwest, and Dillingham, 363 mi (585 km) to the northeast. (AVO)

AVO reported that, although cloud cover often obscured views of Shishaldin during 15-21 October, seismicity indicated that a low-level eruption was likely continuing. ... [more]
Thursday, Oct 16, 2014
Low-level eruptive activity likely continues at the volcano, AVO writes: "Elevated surface temperatures were detected in satellite data from this morning. Sound waves coupling into the ground (ground-coupled air waves) from small explosions as well as small pulses of tremor are occasionally detected in seismic data." (AVO) [more]

Shishaldin volcano's lava lake seen on 10 Aug (image: Cyrus Read / AVO)
Thursday, Aug 14, 2014
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) released a photo showing a small active lava lake inside the volcano's crater. Previously available satellite imagery was only able to identify a heat source, but not the type of its source, i.e. the activity at the volcano. [more]
MODIS hot spots at Shishaldin (MODVOLC, Univ. Hawaii)
Wednesday, Jul 23, 2014
According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, weak activity continues. MODIS data show elevated surface temperatures in the summit crater, but there are no visual or other indicators of eruptive activity available. [more]
