KVERT recorded an explosion at the volcano that generated a dense dark ash plume, which reached approx. 17,000 ft (5,200 m)
altitude and drifted SE.
Additionally recorded strong fumarolic activity with small amount of ash and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches associated with this process.
Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
The volcano's lava dome remains in a very active state.

Introduction to Plate Tectonics
: The Earth's upper, rigid layer is broken into several plates which are in constant motion to one another. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur as result of these plate boundaries.
Eruption from close
: On 17 Oct, explosions were particularly violent at Anak Krakatau. We show a series of images of a spectacular explosion captured from close range by boat.
