Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin recorded an explosive activity from the active crater with ash emissions that reached 14,000 ft (4,267 m)
Wednesday, Dec 19, 2018
Following the recent vigorous eruptive phase, activity is gradually declining, though at a slower rate than after the previous phase in early October. Another phase of strong eruption could begin quickly again in the volcano's current and somewhat-temperamental state.
Sunday, Dec 16, 2018
A new, intense (but probably again short-lived) eruptive phase started at the volcano early this morning, producing tall lava fountains and an ash column that rose at least 5-7 km height. ...
The small Soputan stratovolcano on the southern rim of the Quaternary Tondano caldera on the northern arm of Sulawesi Island is one of Sulawesi's most active volcanoes. The youthful, largely unvegetated volcano rises to 1784 m and is located SW of Sempu volcano. It was constructed at the southern end of a SSW-NNE trending line of vents. During historical time the locus of eruptions has included both the summit crater and Aeseput, a prominent NE-flank vent that formed in 1906 and was the source of intermittent major lava flows until 1924.
