Typical strombolian explosion Thursday morning (image: INGV Catania webcam)Access to the summit area has been officially re-opened, just in time for the coming tourist season where group tours to climb the volcano are organized daily, allowing a unique chance to see its eruptions from close.
The activity at the volcano has been at normal levels recently, with small to moderate strombolian-type explosions from various vents every 5-10 minutes on average.
A slightly larger-than-average explosion occurred at the volcano 2 days ago (8 Mar) at 14:10 local time, generating an ash plume that rose a few hundred meters. Activity returned to lower levels soon after.
Local news reports such as a recent entry on La Sicilia online newspaper ("Stromboli, fortissima esplosione") often tend to exaggerate the situation.
