Stromboli volcano eruptions:
Persistant (near-constant) activity since at least 2-3000 years. Most recent effusive (lava flow) eruptions from Dec. 2002-July 2003, March 2007, Aug-Oct 2014.
Typical eruption style:
Small explosive (strombolian) eruptions, typically every 20-30 mins. Intermittently, ca. every 2-20 years, minor effusive eruptions (lava flows); on average 2-5 times per year larger explosions.

Over the past weeks, the frequency of explosions at the volcano has significantly increased.
Our tour leader Marco Fulle visited the volcano yesterday along with a small group on our ongoing Stromboli to Etna tour and reported that they saw more than 100 eruptions from various vents in total, during the 90 minutes they stayed on the top!

INGV Catania summarized the activity for the past week: The N1 (northeastern) vent produced explosions of varying intensity from low (less than 80 m high) to medium (less than 150 m high) levels, ejecting with coarse incandescent material (lapilli and bombs) and minor ash. While the adjacent N2 vent is less active, it also shows explosions of varying intensity from 40-120 m ejection heights, but more rich in ash. The frequency of eruptions from both northern vents ranged between 3-11 events/hour.´
The central vent C has two emission points and continues to show constant degassing. The vents in the northwestern and southern crater area (nor labelled S1, S2) showed strombolian activity at similar rates as the northern vents:
Vent S1 and S2 both produced jets of incandescent material of low to medium intensity (80-120 m). The frequency of the explosions from the CS area has been variable between 10 and 20 events/hour.

Eruptions from Stromboli's NE crater continue to be impressive, with heights reaching up to 200-300 m above the vent. The attached picture is an example of a moderate explosion we observed during our ongoing tour yesterday evening from a viewpoint on Bastimento, at about the same elevation from a few 100 m to the east.
