Glow above the crater of Suwanose-jima volcano (Japan)
Weak reddish glow can be seen above the active Ontake crater at night. It is possible (if not likely) that there is weak strombolian activity. During the past weeks, a few more energetic explosions produced ash plumes that could be identified by VAAC Tokyo.
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013
Explosive activity has resumed at the remote volcano in the Tokara Island chain. VAAC Tokyo reported explosions yesterday and this morning, with ash plumes rising to 4,000-6,000 ft (1.2-1.8 km) altitude.
Thursday, Sep 12, 2013
A new eruption was reported this morning producing an ash plume rising about 1 km above the Ontake crater to an altitude of 6,000 ft (1.8 km) and drifting NW.(VAAC Tokyo)
Friday, Sep 06, 2013
Eruptions continue on the remote island. An explosion this morning produced an ash plume rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude (VAAC Tokyo).
Wednesday, Aug 28, 2013
The volcano has entered an eruptive phase with frequent explosions, which over the past 2 days produced several ash plumes rising as high as 12,000 ft (3.6 km) altitude.
Monday, Aug 26, 2013
An explosion at 01:54 GMT was reported by VAAC Tokyo earlier today. The height of the ash plume could not be determined.
More on VolcanoDiscovery:
Fuego volcano photos
: One of Central America's most active volcanoes, Fuego in Guatemala is in near-permanent explosive eruption with intermittent phases of increasing activity that generate lava fountains, lava flows and pyroclastic flows.
Walking & Study tours
: VolcanoDiscovery's signature tours for small groups: Discover volcanoes and volcanic areas from close with an expert in their field! These tours have a broad mix of activities and interests from photography, walking, study travel, nature & culture.
Divergent plate boundaries in oceans
: Two ocean plates move apart from each other. Hot upwelling mantle material forms magmas that continuously produce new oceanic crust. An ocean widens.
Volcano Tours on Hawai'i
: The Hawaiian Islands are not only home to the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, but also boast a unique natural environment. Born by volcanic activity of a very active hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Plate, they are a showcase of natural history.
