Suwanose-jima volcano (Tokara Islands, Japan) activity update
Tuesday Dec 31, 2013 15:01 PM | BY: T
Strong activity at Suwanose-jima volcano (JMA webcam)
The volcano continues to produce frequent and intense strombolian explosions and produces a low level ash plume.
Sunday, Dec 29, 2013
Bright glow from intense strombolian activity, or perhaps even the presence of a small lava lake or lava fountains, are visible on the JMA webcam on Nakanoshima island to the NE. VAAC Tokyo reports continuous low-level ash emissions.
Saturday, Dec 28, 2013
The volcano's activity has picked up. Today, VAAC Tokyo reported at least 3 explosions with low-level ash plumes. Bright glow from the crater area is visible at night, suggesting elevated strombolian to vulcanian-type activity. Here is a video of today's activity: ...
Friday, Dec 27, 2013
A small explosion occurred this morning (JST time) at the volcano; VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 4,000 ft (1,2 km) altitude.
Friday, Dec 06, 2013
Weak reddish glow can be seen above the active Ontake crater at night. It is possible (if not likely) that there is weak strombolian activity. During the past weeks, a few more energetic explosions produced ash plumes that could be identified by VAAC Tokyo.
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013
Explosive activity has resumed at the remote volcano in the Tokara Island chain. VAAC Tokyo reported explosions yesterday and this morning, with ash plumes rising to 4,000-6,000 ft (1.2-1.8 km) altitude.
More on VolcanoDiscovery:
Fuego volcano photos
: One of Central America's most active volcanoes, Fuego in Guatemala is in near-permanent explosive eruption with intermittent phases of increasing activity that generate lava fountains, lava flows and pyroclastic flows.
Walking & Study tours
: VolcanoDiscovery's signature tours for small groups: Discover volcanoes and volcanic areas from close with an expert in their field! These tours have a broad mix of activities and interests from photography, walking, study travel, nature & culture.
Divergent plate boundaries in oceans
: Two ocean plates move apart from each other. Hot upwelling mantle material forms magmas that continuously produce new oceanic crust. An ocean widens.
Volcano Tours on Hawai'i
: The Hawaiian Islands are not only home to the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, but also boast a unique natural environment. Born by volcanic activity of a very active hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Plate, they are a showcase of natural history.
