Taal volcano (Philippines) update: surface activity decreases, internal unrest remains high
Wednesday Jan 22, 2020 08:24 AM | BY: T
The activity of the volcano has continued to decrease overall, showing no significant changes: the observatory reported it was characterized by "weak emission of white steam-laden plumes 50 to 500 meters high from the Main Crater that drifted southwest.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions dropped to 153 tonnes per day; seismic activity also decreased, but is still very elevated. PHIVOLCS detected 481 volcanic earthquakes during a recent 24 hours window, all being too small to be felt.+
Despite the apparent calm at the surface, the monitoring parameter indicate that magma continues to intrude into the shallow reservoir of the volcano, which might (but not must) lead to a re-intensification of volcanic activity at the surface in the short to medium future.
The alert level remains at 4, the second highest on the Philippine scale of 1-5.
