Phreatic eruptions at Tenchozan occurred approximately 1,900 years ago. Towards the end of those eruptions there was a phreatomagmatic or small magmatic eruption. The chain of explosion craters, stretching from the NE to the SW, are considered to be a result of this series of eruptions
